VOC-free
Table of contents
What is VOCs free?
VOCs stands for volatile organic compounds, a series of chemical compounds which evaporate. VOCs are contained in not only in soldering materials but also in many different industrial products. When VOC gas are released into atmosphere, they are concerned with environmental affect and biological hazards.
Environmental affect of VOCs
- Acid rain and forest damage due to photochemical oxidant
- Depletion of ozone layer in stratosphere
- Global warming
Health hazards of VOCs
- Eye irritation, nausea and headache from photochemical oxidant
- Ecotoxicity from direct exposure (carcinogenic substance, etc.)
We shall strive to reduce the solvent use considering the serious impact of VOCs emission to the environment and human health.
Solution by soldering materials
Change the solvent in the flux from isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to pure water
Pros:
- By using pure water instead of solvent, VOCs emission during soldering can be significantly reduced.
- Easier handling as water-based flux is neither combustible nor toxic.
- No need for hazardous material storage as water-based flux is not classified as dangerous goods.
- Administrative cost can be reduced compared to IPA-based flux.
Cons:
- Inferior dryness and meltability (sticky PCB surface after soldering).
- Higher surface tension when the solder is molten, which may induce bridging, etc.
KOKI original flux technology can solve the cons associated with water-based flux.
Special resin can improve the dryness issue and reduce unmolten solder and bridging occurrence
