What is laser soldering?
Laser soldering forms solder joint by providing certain amount of heat at desired spot. In conventional soldering, such as manual soldering which uses soldering iron or robot soldering is known to be difficult to maintain stable soldering quality due to change in iron tip erosion or temperature fluctuation due to the characteristics of components in surrounding area. Laser soldering achieves stable output of high-quality solder joint.
Market demand
Increasing demand for laser soldering
Laser soldering demand is growing especially for camera module or connector pins.
In laser soldering, the laser is not directly focused on the component. Therefore, it can not only avoid thermal stress on the electric components but also avoid temperature fluctuation during the heating.

Laser soldering cases
・Camera module for mobile devices: The lens cannot stand the heat. Component size too small to be manually soldered.
・Connector soldering for automotive components: Higher quality solder joint than manual soldering is desired.
Optical axis in camera module has known to be out of alignment due to heat from manual or reflow soldering. Such quality risk can be reduced by using lase soldering, as the heat is radiated at a very limited area and soldering is completed instantly.
As for the automotive application, continuous manual soldering is known to deteriorate the soldering iron tip and causes unstable solder joint quality. Larger connectors, such as 2.54mmP, picked laser soldering to achieve uniform and stable solder joint quality. As a result, number of defective solder joints and solder ball have been reduced.
